What are some of the reasons why you categorize some friends as close and others as acquaintances? My guess is your close friends are people that you can depend on, they are accountable, they always pull up for you when you need them, they keep their word and they sometimes sacrifice for you and put your needs ahead of theirs.
So, I asked myself what kind of friend is Alieh to Alieh? Can I depend on her, does she always come through for me, Is she accountable? The answer I got was Alieh is not a close friend of Alieh. But how is this possible?
This is true because I was doing a lot of things which didn’t align with my goals, values and focus areas, so I couldn’t pull up for Alieh when she needed me the most. Alieh couldn’t depend on me because I didn’t live up to my commitments on things that were most important to her. This revelation was what I needed because it will help me become the type of friend that I want to be to myself.
Are you doing too much, too little or just enough? The follow-up question you should ask yourself is, too much, too little or just enough of what?
The end of the year is approaching, so this is the perfect time to evaluate and appreciate all the things you accomplished this year. Write down what you want to accomplish next year, what do you want to be known for next year? It doesn’t have to be anything super big but let it be meaningful to you. An example could be, “next year I want to be known as the person in my family who communicates better and reaches out to people.” Or next year I want to put God at the center of my life and all major decisions that I make.
To begin this process, start by writing down your goals, values and the things or areas in your life you want to focus on. Remember that you want to be a close friend to yourself and not an acquaintance, so be realistic and write down things you can actually commit to and deliver on.
As you go through your day to day life continue to ask yourself if the things you are doing too much, too little or just enough of align with what you are trying to achieve. Life is unpredictable so the things you write down might change due to circumstances, therefore give yourself room to flex and adapt. Also, your definition of too much, too little or just enough will vary for different things based on their importance to you.
I recently did this exercise myself because I was going through some things which I will talk about in my next blogpost. I will also define goals, values and focus areas in the upcoming blogpost.
After the exercise, the areas I decided to focus on for this upcoming year were my fashion business, blog and nutrition. I also realized that I spend too much time on Instagram, so I need to get it down to just enough, and use some of that time to explore outside opportunities.
Remember that Every day is new day where you get a clean slate and a chance for you start making those dreams a reality. So, don’t beat yourself up if you fail on some days, focus on progress not perfection.
